Arthritis means “ inflammation of the joints". There are many different types of arthritis ranging from 'wear and tear' as in Osteoarthritis to an autoimmune condition (the body attacking itself) as in Rheumatoid arthritis.
All types of arthritis lead to inflammation of the joints and the surrounding soft tissues. This usually causes pain and stiffness.
It is therefore important to keep the joints mobile and as flexible as possible. Moving the joints will help with reducing the inflamatory process and slows down the progression of arthiritis. Helping with the alignment of the joints also reduces the overload of the joints and slows down inappropriate wear.
Using osteopathic techniques can help to reduce the progression of the disease by facilitating improved quality of movement and release of soft tissues tightness over joints. All this will help dissipate inflammation and subsequently pain.
Patients can also benefit from a post operative rehabilitation regime to ensure that all relevant structures are balanced and therefore accelerating the healing process and potentially improving the outcome.
